Big Difference?

A friend and I were talking on Christmas Eve, and I was telling him that I felt lonely. He responded that although he was alone for the holiday, he wasn't necessarily feeling lonely, but isolated was a more appropriate word. Let's just go over this real quick...

Isolate: to set apart from others.

Lonely: a) being without company, b) cut off from others.

Is it just me...or...talk to me, again, about the difference...

Is this that "emotional" lonely versus the "physical" isolation stuff people question?

If I had a dime for every time I heard that...

I can see a difference between being cut off from others, and being set apart from others.

Being cut off implies (to me) that the isolation is imposed by others, or otherwise out of your control.

Being set apart from others might be at someone else's whim, or might be of your own choice. Hard to tell.

And there's definitely a difference between being without company and being set apart from others.

We could also talk about being lonely in a crowd of people. That's the worst.
